Patch test
A small application of a chemical product to the skin at least 48 hours before a service to check for an allergic reaction.
Strand test
A test of a colour or lightening product on a small section of hair to predict the result and the hair's condition before a full service.
Oxidative colour
Permanent or demi-permanent hair colour that is mixed with a peroxide developer to deposit or lift colour.
Developer
A hydrogen peroxide solution, described in volume strength, that activates colour and lightening products.
Contraindication
A condition, medication or circumstance that means a service must not go ahead or must be modified.
Skin penetration
Any service that pierces, cuts or removes the skin, such as needling, piercing or extraction, which attracts additional public health requirements.
Semi-critical item
A reusable instrument that touches intact skin and can contact blood, which must be cleaned and sterilised between clients.
Safety data sheet
The manufacturer's document describing a hazardous chemical's hazards, safe handling, storage, first aid and disposal.
Rebooking rate
The share of clients who book their next appointment before leaving the salon, used as a measure of service quality and loyalty.
Redo service
A repeat or corrective service provided at no charge because the original result did not meet the agreed outcome.
