Purpose. This procedure sets out how to perform, record and act on a patch test for hair colour, tint and adhesive products.

1.When a patch test is required

A patch test must be performed for every new client before an oxidative colour, bleach with toner, lash or brow tint, or lash extension adhesive service. It must be repeated where the client has not had the product for more than six months, where the product brand or line changes, or where the client reports any skin reaction, new medication or new medical condition since the last test.

2.Preparation

Confirm the products planned for the service and check the manufacturer's patch test instructions on the safety data sheet. Put on gloves. Clean a small area behind the ear or on the inner elbow with a damp cotton pad and dry it. Explain to the client what to expect and what to do if they react.

3.Performing the test

Mix a small amount of the product exactly as it would be used in the service, apply a coin-sized amount to the prepared area and allow it to dry. Instruct the client to leave the area uncovered and unwashed for 48 hours. Record the date, time, product name, batch and the staff member's initials on the client card.

  • Use the actual product and developer
  • Coin-sized application, left to dry
  • 48 hour observation period
  • Record product, batch and initials

4.Reading the result

At the service appointment, or by phone at 48 hours, ask the client whether the area has shown redness, itching, swelling, blistering or discomfort. Inspect the area where possible. A clear result must be recorded as passed with the date. Any reaction must be recorded as failed, the planned product must not be used, and the client must be offered an alternative or referred to their doctor.

5.Reactions during or after a service

If a client reports burning, itching or swelling during a service, stop immediately, remove the product with cool water, and follow the first aid guidance on the safety data sheet. Call the site leader, record the event in the incident register and complete the Incident and Hazard Report Form. Do not apply any further chemical product to that client until the site leader has reviewed the record.

6.Records

Patch test results form part of the client record and must be kept for seven years. The Salon Manager will check a sample of colour client cards each month to confirm a current patch test is on file.
